Graeme Dott

Graeme Dott

Peter Ebdon v Graeme Dott is a fixture that echoes their World Snooker Championship final match in 2006 which Graeme Dott went on to win 18-14. Since then both players have slipped, particularly Dott’s who started to suffer from depression from a succession of personal tragedies in late 2006/2007 and is yet to return to his previous World Championship winning form. He had a further setback in 2008/2009 when he broke his left arm and had to pull out of the Shanghai Masters and the Snooker Grand Prix. Last year, for the first time since his 2006 World Championship victory, Dott made it to the second round of the World Snooker Championship. He lost to Mark Selby and dropped out of the World Snooker Rankings top 16. Since then he has slipped further and is currently ranked 28th, 14 places behind his first round opponent, Peter Ebdon who remains in the top 16 and is currently 14th.

In the same year that Peter Ebdon lost the 2006 World Snooker Championship to Graeme Dott he won the UK Championship. Like Dott, he suffered from a dip in form and failed to progress further in a ranking event in 2006 further than the quarter finals. Poor form continued to trouble Ebdon in 2008 with a particular low point coming in the Northern Ireland trophy when he uncharacteristically poor performance and suspicious gambling patterns led to an investigation by the Gambling Commission. In 2009 and 2010 Peter Ebdon has continued to improve and he climbed back to 14th in the ranking, largely due to his 2009 China Open win.

Both Peter Ebdon and Graeme Dott are very experienced players, who have had dips in form but have the ability to play snooker like World Champion’s. Ebdon having won the World Snooker Championship in 2002 and Dott four years later in 2006. The odds are likely to favour Peter Ebdon as he has shown better form entering the competition but Dott’s potential could make it a close match.
